When potty training time comes, you quickly discover that potty training pants come in quite a few types. In shop photos they can all look fairly similar. But when you look closer, the differences are quite big.<\/p>\n

Some are made mainly to prevent leaks. Some let your child feel the wetness much more clearly. And some are multi-purpose and can be used even before potty training begins.<\/p>\n

I get asked quite often what the difference is, so I am putting three common options side by side: PUL potty training pants, Nulu organic cotton potty training pants<\/a> and the patented Nuplid 3in1<\/a>.<\/p>\n

PUL potty training pants<\/h2>\n

Many potty training pants are made of PUL, or polyurethane laminated fabric. PUL is used because it helps stop moisture from passing through the fabric. The inside of the pants is often lined with fleece or another stay-dry material that wicks moisture away from the skin.<\/p>\n

The biggest advantage of this solution is leak protection. If your child has an accident, the moisture is less likely to go straight through to their clothes or the floor.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, a stay-dry inner layer means your child may not clearly feel the wetness against their skin. From a potty training point of view, this can be an important difference. Part of learning is noticing your body’s signals and connecting them with going to the potty.<\/p>\n

This does not mean PUL pants are “wrong” during potty training. Quite the opposite: in some situations, such as car journeys or time away from home, their extra moisture protection may be exactly what a parent needs.<\/p>\n

Nulu organic cotton potty training pants<\/h2>\n

Nulu potty training pants are designed with a different idea in mind.<\/p>\n

They have no PUL layer and no fleece lining. Soft organic cotton jersey sits against your child’s skin, and the crotch has four absorbent layers of organic cotton terry, with a total weight of about 1060 g\/m\u00b2.<\/p>\n

This means the pants absorb a small accident, but your child still notices that something happened. This signal is important during potty training: your child can gradually get better at noticing what their body is doing.<\/p>\n

There is now also an interesting new study on this. A pilot study published in 2025 followed children aged 18 to 36 months who had not yet started potty training. It found that the children showed more urination-related signals without a diaper than while wearing a disposable diaper. The study was small and the authors stress that more research is needed. So it does not show that disposable diapers cause later potty training. But it does support the idea that sensing these signals may matter in potty training.<\/p>\n

Nulu potty training pants are made exactly for this in-between stage, when your child is slowly moving from diapers towards real underwear.<\/p>\n

They are soft, with a breathable cotton outer layer, and absorbent enough that a small accident does not automatically mean a full change of clothes. However, they are not waterproof, and with a bigger accident the moisture may come through.<\/p>\n

Nuplid 3in1<\/h2>\n

Nuplid were born from a slightly different idea.<\/p>\n

They are made of 95% GOTS-certified<\/a> organic cotton and 5% elastane. They have a pocket for a removable cotton-bamboo trifold insert.<\/p>\n

This removable insert is what makes Nuplid so versatile.<\/p>\n

At first you can use them as a fitted diaper together with Nulu wool pants<\/a>. Later you can leave out the wool pants and use Nuplid during potty training. When potty training is over, they don’t have to sit in the closet. Just take out the insert and use them as soft everyday underwear.<\/p>\n

Another thing that mattered a lot to me with Nuplid is that your child can pull them up by themselves. You don’t need to lay your child down to change them, which is especially nice at an age when children have very firm opinions about what they want to do themselves. \ud83d\ude05<\/p>\n

So Nuplid are not just potty training pants. They can move with your child from one stage to the next.<\/p>\n

Which potty training pants should you choose?<\/h2>\n

There is no single right answer here. It all depends on what you need most at the moment.<\/p>\n

If leak protection matters most, PUL pants can be practical, for example on car journeys, longer outings or whenever you don’t want to risk moisture reaching clothes.<\/p>\n

If you want your child to feel the wetness and learn to notice their body’s signals, Nulu organic cotton potty training pants are made for exactly that. They are not waterproof, but for smaller accidents they offer both absorbency and a noticeable feeling.<\/p>\n

If you are looking for something you can use through several stages, Nuplid 3in1 are the most versatile option. You can use them as a fitted diaper, then during potty training and finally as soft everyday underwear.<\/p>\n

And maybe you don’t have to choose just one.<\/p>\n

Some days you are at home and want your child to notice their body’s signals as well as possible. On other days you are driving for three hours, and it matters more that an accident stays inside the pants.<\/p>\n

Potty training doesn’t have to be one fixed method or one fixed product. It is a process where your child learns step by step to listen to their body. At the same time, you learn what works best for your child. \ud83e\udd0d<\/p>\n
